FEMINISM IN MULTIMEDIA


 This week I want to focus on what we have achieved. The path for feminism is a long one and there is still a long way to go. However, some progress has been accomplished, and that it is worth celebrating. We can recognize those achievements in various aspects of our lives such as the right to vote, education, working status, (some) gender stereotypes, gender perception... Multimedia is a way that has been used to express that progress and it is what we will be focusing on today. So let's see a few examples.


MUSIC: a lot of artists have been addressing feminism in their work.

Bad Bunny: "Yo Perreo Sola"
This song says that girls don't need men to dance. It is set in night clubs and parties, etc. but the thought can be put into other contexts in life. The song is basically talking about how girls can be successful on their own and don't need a man by their side to be complete. Also, as we can see in the video below, he shows up as a women as a symbol of equality.


Sech, Daddy Yankee, J Balvin, Rosalía, Farruko: "La Relación Remix"
This song talks about how the situation in relationships has changed and how now it is the woman who chooses who to be with. It also says that women are living their own lives away from their relationsihps and how they have the power of deciding what they want and what they don't want in their lives. It is a message of power for women.



ADVERTISING: a lot of brands have been trying to increase feminism awareness in their commercials and public image.

L'Oréal Paris: "This is an ad for men"
L'Oréal did some research on product management that showed than 91.4% of management and governing boards across Germany were composed by men and that only 2 women had higher leading roles within that market segment across the country. The brand came up with 3 stats about gender managing in the sector.
  • When women occupy 30% of management positions the profitability rose by 15%.
  • Female executives perform 24% above men in management reviews
  • Firms which employed more women leaders generated around 20% mote patents per year.
L'Oréal used this information and their produts to create their infographics. "This is an ad for men" is a perfect sentence since those ads go through men approval before they are introduced to the public and the brand did a great job with it.

  1. I really enjoyed raeding this post. I loved "Yo Perreo Sola" by BadBunny. I think he was very brave to release this typf of song espcially with relating the concept of the video to the song.

    1. Thank you! "Yo Perreo Sola" is a great tune with a great message. I believe it took a lot of courage for Bad Bunny to present himself that way but totally worth it!
