LET'S NORMALIZE BODY HAIR

It is funny how Body Hair is treated. In women, the hair coming from the head is a symbol of femininity, it is valued and even admired, it is somehow a sign of youth and fertility. But what about the rest of the hair? Socially speaking, it seems outrageous that women have hair on their legs, armpits, not to talk about the mustache. For decades women have been removing that hair, believing it is their role, saying "I HAVE to shave, look at me!".

Wait for a second here, you HAVE to? Do you really HAVE to? Are you less feminine because of some hair on your legs? Are you less of a woman just because your armpits are not shaved?

The answer is no, but probably you knew that already. So if people know this, how come it is not put into practice? The answer is society. We are socially educated in a lot of aspects of our lives and this isn't any different. Throughout time both women and men have understood that women need to shave because it is a gender characteristic. And this has led to today, a time when lots of women feel they need to shave as if they didn't have a choice.

A PROBLEM FOR MEN AND WOMEN

This is not a women matter only. This also includes man. What happens when a man shaves? He is crossed out as homosexual, at least. But does hair really define who we are? Nope. Men can choose to shave or not to as well as women. This is a major issue affecting everyone.

ON THE MEDIA

A lot of brands and public figures have started to address this issue and to treat it as normal in both men and women. Let's see some examples:

(1) Nike (sports wear brand)

(2) Lady Gaga (singer)

(3) Cristiano Ronaldo (soccer player)

Besides famous people, there are lots of sites and social media accounts trying to address this issue. Please watch this video from TikTok by @emoboysadface posed by @goldenposts_ on Instagram.

AT THE END OF THE DAY...

It is amazing to take some distance from cultural expectations and to realize what your own person really thinks about the issue. Allow yourself to have a voice, allow yourself to choose. Don't let society own you and your body. Own it and take care of it, remember it will accompany you throughout your whole life.

    1. This is another example of society being picky about hair; a needed change. How much is too much hair? Where is the limit and who puts that limit? See, it doesn't make any sense! The goal is to abolish those thoughts, and the best part is it can be accomplished.
